New Hampshire is located in the northeastern region of the United States known as New England. It is nicknamed "The Granite State" due to its geology. America's Stonehenge, in North Salem, is a site that is home to an ancient astronomical calendar. In addition to the astronomical observatory, the 105-acre site offers snowshoeing and sledding. America's Stonehenge is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In Dover, the Children's Museum of New Hampshire is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It features interactive exhibits aimed at children from pre-school through elementary school. The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in Weirs Beach has exhibits that describe the history and cultural heritage of the lake, as well as the cities that surround the lake. The Currier Museum of Art in Manchester has exhibits showcasing American and European artwork, ranging from paintings and decorative arts, to sculpture and photographs. It is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the first Thursday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
In Newbury, on Lake Sunapee, the Fells Historic Estate and Gardens occupies 84 beautiful acres. The 22-room Colonial Revival home is open to the public for tours. The guided tours take approximately 40 minutes and cover the history of the architecture as well as the family that occupied the home. Guided tours of the gardens are available from the end of June through the middle of August. The Fells Historic Estate and Gardens are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with varying days based on the season.
The Seacoast Science Center is located in Odiorne State Park in Rye and features exhibits that focus on the environmental history of the coastal areas of the state. From April to October, the center is open seven days a week, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. From November to March, it is open Saturday through Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves in North Woodstock contains a ¾ mile walk/hike through caves and stone. There is also the opportunity to pan for gems, such as crystal, amethyst and calcite. Lost River Gorge is open from the middle of May through the end of October. Daily hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In Salem, Canobie Lake Park, features thrill rides, games and live entertainment. It is open seasonally, with varying hours. Generally, it is open May through September from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Six Gun City and Fort Splash Water Park, located in Jefferson, offers rides, shows and live entertainment. It is open June through September with varying hours but generally from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily.
One of the most interesting ways to see some of the state's beautiful landscapes is from aboard a train. The Hobo Railroad in Lincoln and the Winnipesaukee Railroad in Meredith, both offer daily excursions. Picnic lunches are available for purchase on board. Both round-trip train rides take between one to two hours.
New Hampshire is teeming with outdoor activities, year round. In the warmer months, fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, climbing, hiking and biking are popular. The winter has countless opportunities to participate in skiing, snowmobile riding, snowshoeing, snowboarding and ice fishing.
Every July, the Stratham Fair takes place over the course of four days in Stratham. It has games, rides, livestock and agricultural shows, food and craft vendors and live entertainment. The New Hampshire Maple Festival takes place the last full weekend of March every year. It includes tastings, entertainment and a parade.
